Putting Texas on the Map

by Walter, Matt

The word "Texas" conjures up all sorts of notions some true, some mythical, some larger-than-life. In the world of maps, those that feature Texas are among the most collectible in the world. Thanks to the generosity of Yana and Marty Davis, the Museum of the Big Bend has one of the most important collections of Texas maps in the entire state. These maps are not only important because of when and how they were produced and who produced them, but also because they are primary-source documents which help tell the tale of Texas. They reflect the cartographer's craft and art and the level geographical knowledge at the time they were produced. The maps in this booklet, covering the period from the arrival of the early European explorers up through the U.S. Civil War, illustrate the dynamic history of this land we call Texas.
